Executive
Coaching is just that, coaching executives and management personnel
on how to deal with specific business challenges so that the immediate
problem gets resolved. SELF COACHING
goes beyond this concept of presenting issue resolution. It develops
the individual's ability through the SOLVE
process to understand the greater concept of being able to resolve
any and all difficult issues not just the one presently in front
of them. SELF COACHING is Executive Coaching
taken to the next level.
Executive
Coaching in the business community is not a new concept but one
that has until recently been accessible to only a chosen few. From
top-level executives, through mid-level management and certainly
including the general work force, the vast majority has thought
the availability of executive coaching for workplace issues excluded
them. CHANGE in the workplace has revised
this thinking. It used to be that coaching, mentoring and supervision
were available in our work environment. Not anymore! Now more than
ever there is no one in the existing workplace available to provide
the coaching processes we are seeking. A void has been created!

Outside
of the work environment personal coaches are an identified and accepted
source in helping us attain a variety of life needs. |
Health
and fitness coaches, nutritional coaches, home and personal fashion
coaches to mention just a few, all provide us with guidance, direction
and problem resolution. |
The
reason for these people entering our life is apparent. We don't have
the time, energy or alternative sources available to help us mentor
and monitor our progress in attaining the personal goals we set for
ourselves. |
We
are overwhelmed, overextended and overwrought with the problems, both
at work and in our personal life, which restrict our ability to resolve
existing issues before the next challenge is upon us. We're going
110mph in a 45mph speed zone and something has got to give |

Executive
Coaching
provides one way to catch your breath and clearly think about what
needs to be done, create an option developed plan to accomplish it
and then be able to put your plan into action. |

Problems
seem to have taken hold of society. Some identifiable categories
include anxiety and stress disorders, tremendous increases in the
diagnosis of depression, single-family parenting, the continued
rise in divorce, the challenge of blended families, increased substance
abuse, increased child and adolescent dysfunction as well as countless
other manifested problem categories.
It
is as if there is a pervasive national anxiety that has permeated
our consciousness. This can be seen in the huge amounts of Zanax
and Prozac that are being consumed and considered a normal aid to
functioning in today's hectic society. At times it seems the only
thing to do is roll over and hope things just go away. It is this
hopelessness and feeling of being paralyzed that
SELF COACHING is designed to attack.
Overwhelming!
We have become a society with too much to do it and not enough time
to do it. The on-going stress and pressure of taking care of all
the things and people in our lives that need caring for, leaves
very little time if any to take care of ourselves. Eventually there
is a price that is paid. Some of the pressure cooker elements of
today's society include single parented and blended families with
all the associated issues that add to complicating life. In addition,
economic pressures keep everyone in the family working outside the
home and yet needing to be fresh to work within the home as well.
This extensive constant pressure has to also negatively affect our
primary partner relationships as well as our relationship with ourselves.
Is it any wonder then that it becomes very difficult to consistently
be a good problem solver in our own lives?
There
is a limit to the number of problems that we can effectively solve
in a given day. That is why we need HELP! |
We
need to be able to rely on a process that will provide that help in
empowering ourselves to be able to SOLVE
the continuing problems we face. |
We
need to rely on ourselves to move us along in life. We need to be
able to SELF COACH ourselves in order
to SOLVE our problems. |
An
additional benefit of the SOLVE process
is that SELF COACHING works for personal
issues as well as problems in the work environment. Why would this
be particularly important to the organization? Well, actually for
a variety of reasons. First, employees with personal problems many
times do not show up for work, or they start late or leave early.
This is not a particularly appetizing group of options. |
When
the stress, pressure, anxiety and depression (take your pick), of
dealing unsuccessfully with personal problems are so overwhelming,
then work becomes out of the question. |
Whether
this condition lasts a day or an extended period of time, the stress
on the organization resulting from absenteeism and tardiness is a
problem in itself. |
The
other side of the coin is that employee with personal problems many
times DO show up for work. People who have difficulty concentrating
and focusing do not normally become the employee of the month. |
When
our mind is wandering or reworking personal unresolved issues much
of our strength, energy, creativity and productive thinking is lost.
Even
though the person is there, they are really not there as identified
by their productivity or lack of it. |
Therefore,
the value of individually owning the SOLVE
process allows for its use whenever necessary and beneficial, whether
it is for resolving personal or work-related problems. |
It
is this ability to fulfill two needs that supports the dual-purpose
benefit of SELF COACHING. I have strong
beliefs that the ability to competently resolve problems in one context
can certainly be shifted to other situations. Once the SOLVE
model is "owned" by the individual, it is theirs to use in their personal
as well as professional life. How could this be otherwise? |
| |

Change!
That is what SELF COACHING promotes.
Your workplace environment has changed. Re-engineered, right-sized,
reorganized or whatever the term, the end result is identical. Change!
As workplace surroundings change you need to change as well. Problems
that were someone else's issues are now yours. People who used to
help solve your problems are no longer there. It is now up to you
and that is good news. You can Do It and SELF
COACHING will show you how. SELF COACHING
is a process of change. It is a process of identifying difference,
being able to respond to the needs of today's work environment that
demands more personal responsibility. |
| |
| |
| |
SELF
COACHING allows teams to perform in a more effective, constructive
and productive way. As is sometimes the case teams do not understand
or use the process necessary to cooperatively demonstrate teamwork
concepts. Rather than a true team approach in identifying and resolving
workplace issues a vocal minority of the team many times seems to
take control. Obviously this limits or eliminates drawing from the
different ideas and perspectives that the total team has to offer.
Using
SELF COACHING and the SOLVE
process for team application guarantees maximizing each team members
participation in an equal, cooperative dialogue. Each team member
is responsible for working through the SOLVE
process giving their SELF COACHING
input as they are called on to present their ideas in resolving
the identified issue. Each person is committed to participate equally
when it is their turn to do so for each step of the SOLVE
process. In this way the team gets the benefit of each members thinking
and a better resolution is developed.

SELF
COACHING develops an individual and organizational belief that
"I can do it!" A new level of empowerment
and self-esteem is achieved. Most people like to feel that they have
the ability to resolve the problems they face without someone else
always being there. It is a new statement of trust and confidence
that is established. It says, "You are here because we believe you
can do the job you are responsible to do. You have the ability, you
are competent and you have been trained in the SOLVE
process so you are prepared in knowing what to do and how to do it.
Go for it!" |
| |
| |
These
are the types of feelings and statements that need to be developed
in the workplace. |
| |
| |
This
is what raises moral and makes for happier more productive employees
throughout the organization. |
| |
| |
This
feeling of empowerment, both of our organizational self and our personal
self, is what decreases turnover and increases employee retention. |
| |
| |
This
certainly affects the organization's bottom line in terms of less
needed hiring, training and everything else that goes along with recruiting
new employees. It also creates a smoother running, more productive,
more satisfying place to work. It is just as "profitable" for the
people working within the organization as it is for the organization
itself. The SOLVE process creates a WIN\WIN
environment for everyone! |

Having
a M.S. and Ph.D. in Family and Organizational Systems, family business
is a specialty area that I have a great amount of expertise in.
SELF COACHING and the SOLVE process
certainly works extremely well in dealing with family business issues.
In addition, my personal expertise and understanding of emotional
components, interactions and family dynamics allows me to work with
family businesses to achieve successful outcomes. |
